About Gaumukh Tapovan

Gaumukh Tapovan is one of the most iconic glacier treks in the Indian Himalayas. The trail follows the Bhagirathi River to Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and source of the Ganga, before ascending to the alpine meadows of Tapovan beneath the towering Mt. Shivling. The trek combines spirituality, high-altitude adventure, and dramatic Himalayan scenery.

Gaumukh Tapovan Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Dehradun to Gangotri

  • Stay: Guest house / Hotel at Gangotri
  • Travel Distance: 245 km drive (approx. 8–9 hours)
  • Altitude: Dehradun (640 m) to Gangotri (3,415 m)

The Journey: An early morning departure from Dehradun takes you winding through the scenic towns of Mussoorie, Chamba, and Uttarkashi. The route tracks alongside the roaring Bhagirathi River as you ascend into the sacred town of Gangotri.

Day 2: Gangotri to Chirbasa

  • Altitude: 3,600 meters
  • Trek Distance: 9 km
  • Trek Duration: 5–6 hours

The trek begins from the sacred town of Gangotri. The trail follows the Bhagirathi River through pine forests and rugged mountain terrain. The gradual ascent offers stunning views of Sudarshan Parbat and surrounding Himalayan peaks. Reach Chirbasa campsite for overnight stay.

Day 3: Chirbasa to Bhojbasa

  • Altitude: 3,790 meters
  • Trek Distance: 5 km
  • Trek Duration: 4–5 hours

Continue trekking deeper into the Gangotri valley as the landscape becomes increasingly barren and dramatic. Bhojbasa offers spectacular views of the Bhagirathi massif and expansive glacial terrain. Overnight stay at Bhojbasa campsite/lodge.

Day 4: Bhojbasa to Gaumukh and Tapovan

  • Altitude: 4,463 meters
  • Trek Distance: 8 km
  • Trek Duration: 7–8 hours

Reach Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and one of the holiest sources in India. Cross the glacier moraine and begin the steep climb toward Tapovan. The ascent is physically demanding but rewards trekkers with extraordinary views of Mt. Shivling, Meru, and surrounding glaciers. Overnight camping at Tapovan.

Day 5: Tapovan to Bhojbasa

  • Trek Distance: 8 km
  • Trek Duration: 6–7 hours

Wake up to breathtaking sunrise views over Shivling peak before descending carefully back toward Bhojbasa via Gaumukh. Spend the evening relaxing amidst the peaceful Himalayan environment.

Day 6: Bhojbasa to Gangotri

  • Trek Distance: 14 km
  • Trek Duration: 6–7 hours
  • Stay: Guest house / Hotel at Gangotri

Retrace the scenic trail back to Gangotri through Chirbasa forests and glacial valleys, marking the conclusion of the trek. As you enter Gangotri, enjoy the comfort of a hot shower, normal beds, and a celebratory dinner.

Day 7: Gangotri to Dehradun

  • Travel Distance: 245 km drive (approx. 8–9 hours)
  • Altitude: Gangotri (3,415 m) to Dehradun (640 m)

The Journey: Hop back into the vehicles for the final scenic drive descending back into the foothills, arriving at the Dehradun railway station or airport by evening.
